US Experts in Fiji to Discuss Climate Change in the Pacific

A team of experts from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) will be in Fiji from January 23-27 to identify how USAID may assist Fiji and other Pacific nations to adapt to climate change.

Climate change is an urgent environmental, economic, development and security issue in the Pacific.  Pacific Island nations are especially vulnerable to the projected changes in climate.

The delegation will hold discussions with government officials, scientists, environmentalists, donor agencies, academics, and non-government organizations to identify activities that can help Pacific nations develop clean energy sources, conserve ecosystems, especially coastal mangrove forests, and assist communities to achieve climate-resilient development.

USAID opened a new Pacific Island office in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on October 5, 2011 and is expanding its engagement in the region. USAID is helping Pacific Island nations to address acute environmental issues and the potential negative effects resulting from global climate change.
