Releases Mistaken Identification of Remains (III)

Embassy of the United States of America
Suva, Fiji
Saturday, 07 May, 2005

The Embassy would like to provide further information concerning the mistaken identification of two security guards who were killed in a terrorist attack in Iraq on April 21.

We have received conclusive evidence through DNA analysis that the remains in Fiji are those of an American citizen.  Using the same scientific analysis, the remains of Fiji Citizen, Mr. Wasea Atalifo, have been conclusively identified in Dover, Delaware, USA.

We are working closely with the employers of the deceased to ensure the rightful remains are returned to their respective families as soon as possible.

The Embassy extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families of these brave men. We understand the delay has caused immense anguish for both families, and regret the pain and suffering they have experienced.
