Tribute From US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, to President of the Republic of Fiji in respect of Late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara
Dear Mr. President:
On behalf of the people and government of the United States, I extend our nation's heartfelt sympathy on the passing of former prime minister and president Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. As your country's first and longest serving prime minister, he had long been a central figure in Fiji politics. Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara played an important role in achieving independence for Fiji. His stature in Fiji and in other Pacific Island states was unparalleled as a result of his leadership in promoting regional cooperation. He was instrumental in establishing closer links between Pacific nations and the United States, and in creating the Pacific Island Development Program. During his terms as prime minister and president, our countries enjoyed close and cordial relations, even as they do today. I can only echo the words of Prime Minister Qarase who said, "Fiji has lost a giant among men." my thoughts and prayers are with you and the people of Fiji.
Sincerely,
Colin l. Powell
