Correction To Statements Made By A Radio Station Regarding U.S. Visa Policy
January 7, 2003 MEDIA RELEASE
The Embassy of the United States of America in Fiji wishes to correct statements made by a radio station on January 6 regarding U.S. visa policy and an alleged investigation being conducted by the Embassy in cooperation with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration.
The Embassy states categorically that such investigation exists. The radio statement also claimed that the investigation had been prompted by the issuance of visas on a "who you know" basis. The truth is that the U.S. Embassy in Fiji, like all U.S. diplomatic facilities around the world, decides all visa applications solely on the basis of U.S. law. It reviews each application without regard to the applicant's prominence, wealth or social standing.
If the applicant is qualified for a visa under the law, the Embassy issues the visa. If the applicant is ineligible or unqualified, it does not issue the visa.
