J. William Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship Announcement

The United States Embassy in Suva is pleased to announce the annual competition for the J William Fulbright Foreign Student Program Scholarships for 2010-2011.  Applications are invited from citizens of Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga and Tuvalu.  Successful candidates receive up to three years of graduate-level studies at some of the finest higher learning institutions in the United States.

A mainstay of America’s public-diplomacy efforts, the Fulbright Foreign Student Program brings citizens of other countries to the United States for tertiary study at U.S. universities.  While applications for Master-level study are strongly preferred, study at the Ph.D. level will be considered if such study will result in significant long-term benefits to the host country.

Many foreign Fulbright grantees are early-career professionals who will return to take leadership positions in their home countries, often working at universities or in government service.

The program has brought some of the world’s finest minds to U.S. campuses and offers participants insight into U.S. society and values.  More than 1,800 new Foreign Fulbright Fellows enter U.S. academic programs each year. In conjunction with Fulbright Commissions and U.S. Embassies abroad, the Institute of International Education (IIE) arranges academic placement for most Fulbright nominees and supervises participants during their stay in the United States.

Individuals interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholarship must have completed undergraduate education and hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree and demonstrate an interest in one of the following areas of study:

• Communications/Journalism
• Economic Development
• Educational Administration, Planning and Policy
• Public Health
• Human Rights
• Environmental Studies
• Public Policy, Public Administration
• Good Governance and Rule of Law
• Trafficking in Persons, Policy and Prevention
