The Tonga Market:

The Kingdom of Tonga is a Pacific Island Nation of around 110,000 people. Tonga also has an equal number of citizens living overseas mainly in New Zealand, the United States, and Australia, in that order. By some estimates, up to 40,000 Tongans live in the United States. Many Tongans also frequently travel to the United States. This link to the United States translates into a familiarity and preference for U.S. products, in many cases. Although some U.S. products are currently available in Tonga, there is definite scope for growth. Total imports to Tonga in 2005 totaled US$136.8 million. Imports from the U.S. amounted to US$10.78 million in 2005.

In addition, Tonga had large-scale riots in 2006, which resulted in 80 percent of the capital’s central business district burning down. Post believes many businesses would consider purchasing U.S. goods and services during the rebuilding process. Many businesses had their entire stocks destroyed and may consider using new suppliers. This has created a demand for a wide variety of products.

In addition to this opportunity, there is increasing demand for services such as franchises.
