Fiji Human Rights Commissioner and Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali Honored with U.S. “Woman of Courage” Award

To mark International Women’s Day 2007, American Ambassador Larry Dinger has presented the U.S. Department of State’s “Woman of Courage” award to Shamima Ali, Fiji Human Rights Commissioner and Coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre. The award recognizes Mrs. Ali’s “brave defense of freedom and human dignity in Fiji,” her “advocacy of women’s rights over many years” and “fearless stance on behalf of human rights and democracy in recent months.” In a letter to Ali accompanying the award, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky praises Ali’s contributions in “furthering the cause of freedom, justice, peace and equality.”
